Greenhouse Makeover with Dow Chemical

posted Sep 1, 2013, 10:27 AM by President EWB LSU   [ updated Sep 1, 2013, 10:41 AM by Sean Rielly ]

"EWB partnered with The Dow Chemical Company and Career Academy to clean up the three greenhouses and clear out the storage building for use at Capitol High School. They also helped to plant Satsuma and orange trees and tomato plants. Not only will Capitol High students benefit from the cleaned greenhouses and storage building and the fresh vegetables, but also those at the Career Academy, which boasts a culinary arts program.

“This cleanup will make a huge difference to all of the students at the school,” [Courtney Rourke, President of the LSU Student Chapter of EWB-USA] said. “It was great to work with students and faculty from Career Academy and to hear first-hand how excited they were about the results.”"

Engineer It! Day with SWE and Girl Scouts

posted Sep 22, 2012, 12:59 PM by Vice President EWB LSU   [ updated Sep 1, 2013, 10:21 AM by Sean Rielly ]

"In an effort to make girls more aware of what engineering does to improve the quality of life and to inspire them to become engineers, the LSU student chapters of Engineers Without Borders and Society of Women Engineers collaborated to create an event for fourth to eighth grade Girl Scouts.

The two organizations teamed up with Baton Rouge Girl Scouts to show them a day in the life of an engineer. EWB and SWE prepared an interactive presentation for the Girl Scouts to demonstrate how much water is used in the United States every day and how that compares to the amount of water people use in other countries. They also exhibited how much work goes into cleaning and distributing that water."
